SANDARBH-REFERENCE
LECART | ROUYN-NORANDA, QUEBEC, CANADA.
Sandarbh / Référence is both an exhibition and a residency whose extension will take the form of an ephemeral work inscribed in the mining landscape of the City of Rouyn-Noranda. This dual program builds on the context of the Cadillac Fault and builds on that of other regions of the world to create a dialogue between various localities. It involves complex dynamics with multiple historical, cultural, social and economic challenges.
While the mining industry is at the heart of a dynamic without borders, the artist Sashikanth Thavudoz, from India, and the curator Julie Alary Lavallée, the native of Rouyn-Noranda, explore here the modes of collaboration and artistic production in this globalized world where geographical distance is no longer a hindrance to creation.
Sandarbh / Reference begins with an exhibition of the artist's practice in in-situ mining contexts. Sashikanth Thavudoz has so far produced two works in the landscape (Rajasthan, India, Schefferville, Quebec), reflecting the uniqueness of the territory and expanded by exchanges between him and local residents or workers. The individuals he meets each time act as front-line informants, feeding his knowledge of local history and current events. Taking on the appearance of a laboratory, the exhibition will show, among other things, prototypes and the result of his in situ works that are not accessible to the public. Mobile, the exhibition space will serve as a place of creation for the artist and writer for the programme during their 10-day residency which will begin the day after the opening.
The configuration and location of the work on the Glencore Fonderie Horne site in Rouyn-Noranda remain unknown. Upstream conversations between the artist and individuals from the region have been taking place on the Internet for a few weeks now to initiate reflection and remote research. Everything will have to be solved on the spot in ten days.
Opening: April 27
Public presentation: Thursday, May 10, 2018, at 18h (on the spot of the work and in the gallery)
